Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
Notes:

All work on the power steering must be carried out with utmost cleanliness.
^
Thoroughly clean all connections and the surrounding area before disconnecting.
^
If repairs will not be carried out immediately, place removed parts onto a clean surface and cover.
^
Only use lint-free cloths.
^
Carefully cover over opened components or seal, if repairs are not carried out immediately.
^
Only unpack replacement parts immediately prior to installation.
^
Only use parts in their original packing.
^
Do not work with compressed air and do not move vehicle while the system is open.
Removing
^
Relieve torsion bar,
^
Siphon hydraulic oil using VAG1358A or VAG 1307A (if available).
^
Remove noise insulation pan.
^
Remove front exhaust pipe.
^
Open banjo bolt at vane pump (arrow) and drain hydraulic oil (if not yet siphoned off).
^
Unbolt hose lines at steering gear and plug using a plastic bag and tape. Plug threaded bores at power steering gear using plastic plugs.
^
Unbolt tie rods from pinion shaft.
^
Unscrew clamp for stabilizer from subframe.
^
Unbolt bolt for universal joint at steering pinion.
^
Unbolt power steering gear from subframe.
^
Push stabilizer upward.
^
Slide power steering gear slightly toward right, as this will cause the pinion gear of the power steering gear to be pulled out of the universal joint.
^
First swing left side of power steering gear toward rear.
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal.
Notes:
^
For Right Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles, slide power steering gear slightly toward the left.
^
If the steering gear or the tie rod/s were replaced, check toe and adjust if necessary.
