Tightening torques > < Attaching engine to repair stand
4 cyl. carburetor engine, mechanics (1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 litre engine)
Removing and installing engine
Notes on installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order; when doing so, the following points are to be observed.

  • ‒ Lightly lubricate input shaft splines with some G 000 100.
  • ‒ Check whether the dowel sleeves for centring the engine/gearbox are in the cylinder block; insert if necessary.

Vehicles ä 10.78

  • ‒ When flanging on engine/gearbox, flywheel is to be turned such that recess at flywheel is on a level with drive flange.

All vehicles

  • ‒ Lower engine/gearbox with workshop crane. Attach left gearbox carrier to gearbox first. Then bolt engine and gearbox carriers to body, align properly and fully tighten bolts.
 
U10-0020
  • ‒ → Align rear gearbox mounting.
 
U10-0021
  • ‒ → Centre engine and gearbox.
 
U10-0022
  • ‒ → Centre torque arm.
  • ‒ Tighten all bolts.
  • ‒ Align exhaust pipe and silencer such that the loops in front of and behind the main silencer are uniformly loaded. Carefully bend the seccuring hooks if necessary.
  • ‒ Adjust throttle cable and controls
  • ‒ Adjust clutch play.
         Free movement (at clutch pedal): 15...20 mm
  • ‒ Top up coolant => page 19-7
  • ‒ Adjust ignition timing, idle speed and CO content:

=> Repair Group 28; Ignition system

=> Repair Group 22; Mixture preparation, Carburetor

Vehicles with air conditioner

  • ‒ Adjust compressor belt: Additional work and instrucctions for vehicles with air conditioner => page 10-16 .
