Front axle drive hub nut torque

U46-0063

The front axle drive hub nut torque has changed from 225 Nm to 265 Nm.

Note:

Ensure that this torque is applied when carrying out repairs to the front axle.

  • Wheel bearing housing
  • Hub nut
    • ◆ Slacken and tighten with vehicle standing on wheels, accident danger.
    • ◆ Always renew, tighten to 265 Nm
  • Splash plate
  • Drive shaft

Introduction date of VW Mk. II caliper

Golf/Scirocco 81 kW RHD vehicles: June 1979

LHD vehicles: January 1980

Golf /Scirocco vehicles with automatic gearbox: October 1979 (partial introduction prior to this date)

Golf vehicles with M 594: August 1979

Jetta - all models: August 1979

Checking pad thickness

  • ‒ Check the outer brake pad thickness visually (using a torch) through one of the openings in the wheel. When one of the pad thicknesses is down to 7 mm (including backplate) the pads have reached their wear limit and must be renewed.

Removing and installing brake pads

N46-0005
  • ‒ → Detach springs at top and bottom by hand.
  • ‒ Unscrew upper and lower guide bolts.
  • ‒ Remove brake piston housing.
  • ‒ Remove brake pads from pad carrier.

V46-0786
  • ‒ → Press the piston back into the piston housing.
Attention
Before pressing the piston back, draw off the brake fluid from the master cylinder. Otherwise fluid may leak out causing damage, especially if additional fluid has been added in the meantime.
To draw off the fluid, only use a brake bleeder bottle or a plastic bottle which has only contained brake fluid. Brake fluid is poisonous and must on no account be sucked out with a hose.

V46-0489
  • ‒ → Install brake pads.
  • ‒ Install brake piston housing, tightening bolts to 40 Nm.

U46-0027
  • ‒ → Install upper and lower springs.

Note:

With vehicle standing still, fully depress brake pedal a number of times so that the brake pads move into appropriate operating positions.

Modified calipers

From February 1984 modified VW Mk. II calipers with a closed pad carrier are being used.

U46-0028
  • ‒ → Former VW Mk. II calipers.

U46-0029
  • ‒ → New VW Mk. II brake caliper.
Caution
When changing over to 6 J x 14 alloy wheels, only wheels with the Part No. 171 601 025 H can be fitted on vehicles with these new calipers in order to ensure adequate clearance. Wheels of the same version with the index

U46-0030

The following individual parts have been modified:

  • ‒ → Brake pad with retaining springs, old type.

U46-0031

→ Brake pad with retaining springs, new type.

  • ‒ Fit retaining springs on carrier before installing the pads.
  • ‒ Insert caliper only so far that the socket head screws can be started. If the caliper is pressed past this point the retaining springs can be distorted. This will then cause noises when braking.

U46-0032
  • ‒ → Guide pins, old type.

U46-0033
  • ‒ → Socket head screws with guide sleves.
    Thightening torque 25 mm.

The appropriate versions of brake pads with retaining springs, guide pins and socket head screws with guide sleeves are to be fitted as Service Parts.

Modification to locking bolt

From 10.81

  • ‒ With immediate effect the brake calipers are being secured to the wheel bearing housings with a different type of bolt.
  • ‒ Locking bolts - M 10 x 30 - have been introduced as replacements for the old type hexagon head bolts. Tightening torque = 70 Nm.

U46-0034
  •     → 1 -    Locking bolt.
  •     2 -    Normal type hex. hd. bolt.

U46-0035
  • ‒ → At the same time bolt holes in the caliper are being provided with a chamfer.

Service installation:

  • ‒ Locking bolts only will be available as Service Parts. For the installation of these bolts in conjunction with the old type caliper, a chamfer of 1 mm width and 45° must be made in the caliper drillings. This chamfer can be made with either a scraper or a countersink bit. Locking bolt tightening torque = 70 Nm.
