Changing wheels round

When front tyres are badly worn they should be changed from front to rear.

Deeper treads on the front increases safety particularly on wet roads and the tyres all tend to wear evenly.

Removal/installation of tyres

Particular care must be taken when removing or installing the tyres on alloy wheel rims. The tyre beading and rims should be liberally coated with suitable rubber lubricant. The guide roller on tyre mounting machines should be adjusted so that there is approx. 8-10 mm clearance from the wheel ribs.

Otherwise the wheel can become damaged due to the flexing of the guide arm when removing and installing the tyre.

Balancing wheels

On the wheel hub and brake drum is a shoulder which centres the wheel.

When being balanced, the wheels must be centered in the same way in order to obtain maximum accuracy. For this purpose the mounting flange of the balancing machine must be fitted with an appropriate centering ring. The wheel is aligned properly by the centering ring and secured with the wheel bolts while balancing.

Wheels, wheel bolts

U44-0001

→ Steel wheel.

U44-0002

→ Alloy wheel.

U44-0003

→ -A- = for steel wheels: M 12 x 1.5 x 20

-B- = for alloy wheels: M 12 x 1.5 x 28

Caution:
Do not interchange the bolts. If the long bolts are used with the steel wheels they will damage the brakes on the rear wheels. If the short bolts are used with the alloy wheels, the wheels can come off.
Watch the different bolt lengths when changing from one type of wheel to the other (without spare wheel).
The tightening torque for both bolts is 110 Nm.

A - Current wheel / wheel bolt combination

Steel wheels (Old level)

(No wheel identification)

Wheel bolt.
Part No. 321 601 139Z
(smooth head)

U44-0012

→ Spherical Contact surface

  •     1 -    24 mm dia.
  •     2 -    20 mm

Wheel bolt torque: 110 Nm

Caution:
If the long bolts BCA 601 139 are used with these steel wheels they may damage the brakes on the rear wheels.

Alloy wheels

Wheel bolt.
Part No. BCA 601 139
(Castellated head)

U44-0013

→ Spherical Contact surface

  •     1 -    26 mm dia.
  •     2 -    23,5 mm.

Wheel bolt torque: 110 Nm

Caution:
If the short bolts 321 601 139Z are used on these wheels, the bolt torque retention cannot be guaranteed.

B - New wheel / wheel bolt combination

Bolt for Steel and Alloy wheels

Castellated wheel bolt Part No. BCA 601 139
(Same as current alloy wheel bolt)

Wheel bolt torque: 110 Nm

U44-0014

→ New wheel identification (Steel wheels only)

The wheel can be identified by a 26 stamped on the wheel as indicated below.

  •     1 -    26 stamped in this aera.
Caution:
If the short bolts 321 601 139Z are used on these wheels, the bolt torque retention cannot be guaranteed.

C - Mini Spare Wheel identification

As a running change the mini-spare wheel be fitted to all models excluding pick-ups.

U44-0015

→ Only mini-spare wheel part number BCA 601 025A (silver in colour) with changed centre boss is to be used in conjunction with the new steel wheel with 26 identification and alloy wheels.(See illustration below).

Under no circumstances is any other mini-spare wheel to be used on these models as fouling problems could exist between the wheel and brake caliper.

Note:

Mini-spare wheels cannot be used on vehicles with the old level steel wheels IE. Without 26 identification.
