  Note
t  All possible faults which can be recognised by the automatic gearbox control unit -J217- when the fault memory is read and displayed on the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- when the printer is switched on are listed below grouped according to the fault code number.
t  If faults occur only occasionally or if the fault memory was not cleared after the faults were rectified, these faults will be displayed as “sporadic faults” for a stipulated period of time. Gearbox control unit fault detection, → Chapter.
t  If components are indicated as being defective when the fault memory is read, also test the wiring to the components for short circuit and open circuit according to → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
t  The fault code will be printed out in the “rapid data transfer” mode only when the printer of the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- is switched on. Example: Fault code (5 digits) 65535

Possible cause of faultRectifying fault
No fault recognised!If “No fault detected” appears after repairs have been performed, the self-diagnosis is completed.
If the automatic gearbox does not operate properly despite self-diagnosis, continue fault finding according to fault finding programme → Power transmission; No. 14.

2)  First check connectors for contact corrosion or water ingress, renew if necessary. If the solenoid valves are indicated as being faulty pay special attention to the 10-pin connector between conductor strip/valve body and wiring harness on the gearbox.

7)  A faulty gear oil temperature sender -G93- is indicated.
8)  First check connectors for contact corrosion or water ingress, renew if necessary. If the solenoid valves are indicated as being faulty pay special attention to the 10-pin connector between conductor strip/valve body and wiring harness on the gearbox.
9)  First check connectors for contact corrosion or water ingress and renew if necessary.

–  If the fault 00638 is also displayed, this fault must be eliminated first

 Signal outside tolerance For vehicles beginning 01.93 with 6-cylinder engines or Simos engines, the signal from the throttle valve potentiometer -G69- is transmitted via the engine control unit to the gearbox control unit - Engine control unit defective
–  For vehicles from 01.93 with 6-cylinder engines or Simos engines, renew engine control unit → Rep. Gr.24 or → Rep. Gr.25
–  Restore system to basic setting → Chapter
