Removing and installing engine
Notes on removing
  • ‒ The engine is removed forwards together with the gearbox.

Note:

If necessary the anti-theft coding for the radio must be obtained first.

  • ‒ With the ignition switched off disconnect the battery earth strap.
  • ‒ All cable ties which are opened or cut open when removing engine, must be replaced in the same position when installing engine.
  • ‒ Drain coolant .
  • ‒ Remove the two clamping bolts for securing the radiator to lock carrier.
  • ‒ Removing lock carrier with attachments:

=> General body repairs; Repair group 50; Body front; Servicing lock carrier with attachments

Engine codes ATU, AWF, AWG

  • ‒ Removing lock carrier with attachments:

=> General body repairs, Convertible; Repair group 50; Body front; Servicing lock carrier with attachments

  • ‒ Remove connecting pipes between secondary air pump/combi valve and secondary air pump/air cleaner.

Continuation for all vehicles

  • ‒ Remove ribbed belt => Page 13-16 .

Vehicles with air conditioner:

  • ‒ Observe additional information and removal instructions => Page 10-15 .
  • ‒ Remove power assisted steering vane pump with bracket and lay to side; hoses remain connected.

Vehicles with manual gearbox

 
V10-1328
  • ‒ Disconnect clutch cable:

=> 5-Speed manual gearbox 020; Repair group 30; Servicing clutch control; removing and installing clutch cable

  • ‒ → Attach lifting tackle 2024 A as follows and lift slightly with workshop crane:
  • Pulley end:
    2nd hole in hook at position 1
  • Flywheel end:
    2nd hole in hook at position 7
Warning!
The hooks and locating pins must be secured with locking pins.

Notes:

  • ◆ The positions marked 1...4 on the bar must be towards the pulley end.
  • ◆ The holes in the hook rails are counted up from the hook.

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:

  • ‒ Remove crankshaft belt pulley/vibration damper and coolant pump pulley.

  • ‒ → Attach lifting tackle 2024 A as follows and lift slightly with workshop crane:
  • Pulley end:
    4th hole in hook at position 1
  • Flywheel end:
    2nd hole in hook at position 6
Warning!
The hooks and locating pins must be secured with locking pins.

Notes:

  • ◆ The positions marked 1...4 on the bar must be towards the pulley end.
  • ◆ The holes in the hook rails are counted up from the hook.

Continuation for all vehicles

  • ‒ Remove engine carrier and lift assembly out forwards.

Note:

When the assembly is lifted off, it must be carefully guided to prevent damage to the bodywork.

When working on the engine, it should be secured to the assembly stand support clamp VW 313 using the engine and gearbox box support VW 540.
