Self diagnosis
Connecting fault reader V.A.G 1551 and selecting engine electronics control unit

  • ● Battery voltage OK.
  • ● Fuse 21 or 22 OK.
  • ● Earth connections on engine and gearbox OK.
    (Earth connection engine: on cylinder head).
  • ‒ Connecting fault reader:

  • ‒ → Unclip covers for diagnostic connections below the heating/ventilation controls.
  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 with cable V.A.G 1551/1 as follows:
  • ‒ First connect black plug for the fault reader voltage supply to black diagnostic socket.
 
→ Indicated on display:
V.A.G - SELF DIAGNOSIS     HELP
     1 - Rapid data transfer*
     2 - Flash code output*

* Appears alternately

Note:

If the display remains blank:

=> Fault reader operating instructions

  • ‒ Connect white plug to white diagnostic socket. (The blue plug is not required.)

  • ‒ → Open ashtray, remove if necessary and slide cover for diagnostic connections to left -arrow-.
  • ‒ Connect fault reader with cable V.A.G 1551/3.
  • ‒ Depending upon desired function:
    Switch on ignition
         or
    Start engine.
  • ‒ Operate fault reader taking into account the information on the display:
  • ‒ Input 1 for "Rapid data transfer".
  • ‒ Input 01 for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm with Q.
 
→ The fault reader V.A.G 1551 display will show the control unit identification, e.g.:
037906024D     DIGIFANT     1.7     1390
Coding
  • ◆ 037 906 024D = Part No. of the control unit (for up-to-date control unit versions see parts catalogue)
  • ◆ DIGIFANT = Injection system (Digifant)
  • ◆ 1.7 = hardware version (build level) of control unit
  • ◆ 1390 = software version (programme level number) of control unit
  • ◆ Coding = Not used at present
  • ‒ Press ⇒ key.
