Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

  • ◆ Fault reader V.A.G 1551 (or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552) with
         ▸ 07.93: Cable V.A.G 1551/1
         08.93 ▸: Cable V.A.G 1551/3

Work sequence

  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 (V.A.G 1552) and with the "Address word" 01 select the engine electronics control unit. When doing this the engine should be idling.
    (Connecting fault reader and selecting engine electronics control unit .)
  • ‒ When the engine electronics control unit registers, note the control unit version.

Only when engine does not start:

  • ‒ Switch ignition on.
  • ‒ Switch on fault reader printer with the print button. The warning lamp in key lights up.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer     HELP
Select function XX
  • ‒ Operate fault reader taking into account the information on the display:
  • ‒ Input 02 for "Interrogate fault memory" function and confirm with Q key.
 
→ The number of faults stored or "No fault recognised!" will be shown on the display.
X Faults recognised!

If one or more faults are stored:

The stored faults will be displayed and printed out one after the other.

 
→ After the stored faults have been printed out, the display will show:

Select function XX
  • ‒ Input 05 for "Erase fault memory" function and confirm with Q key.

Note:

If the ignition is switched off between "Interrogate fault memory" and "Erase fault memory" the fault memory will not be erased.

 
→ Indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer     ⇒
Fault memory is erased!
  • ‒ Press ⇒key.
  • ‒ Input 06 for "End output" and confirm with Q key.
  • ‒ Eliminate the faults printed out using the appropriate fault table.

  • ‒ After the faults have been eliminated, you must carry out a test drive of at least 5 minutes duration. During which
    • ‒ The coolant temperature must reach at least 80 °C,
    • ‒ The engine speed must be increased to at least 3000 rpm,
    • ‒ The accelerator pedal must be floored briefly.
  • ‒ After the test drive, allow the engine to run for at least a further 5 minutes at idling speed.
  • ‒ Again interrogate the control unit fault memory.

If no fault is stored:

  • ‒ Press the ⇒key.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer     HELP
Select function XX
  • ‒ Input 06 for "End output" and confirm with Q key.

Note:

If the self-diagnosis has not detected a fault, use the appropriate fault table in "Fault finding engine" binder for further fault finding.
