Installing > < Removing and installing rear axle
Removing
Removing
–  Pull off handbrake lever trim.
–  Remove rear ashtray (centre console).
   
–  Remove rear centre console.
–  Remove handbrake cables from handbrake lever.
–  Disconnect ABS sensor cable connector beneath rear seat bench and guide through floor panel.
–  Disconnect vacuum line and electrical wiring.

–  Disconnect brake hoses -arrows-.
–  Detach exhaust system from axle housing.
–  Remove anti-roll bar.
–  Pull handbrake cables out of guide tubes.
–  Disconnect propshaft from viscous coupling.

–  Place engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- under final drive.
–  Unbolt final drive mounting bracket from cross member.

–  Unbolt wishbone from shock absorber -arrow-.

–  Unscrew bolts -A- and -B-.
  V42-1072
–  Lower rear axle with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
  Note
t  During disconnection and lowering, ensure that viscous coupling centring pin -arrow- does not tilt in propshaft or that sealing ring in propshaft tube is damaged.
t  During lowering, adjust engine and gearbox jack plate inclination -A- so that final drive is lowered at rear first.
