Volkswagen Golf Engine Lubrication: Parts Removal & Oil Pressure Check

Checking oil pressure and oil pressure switch

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Oil pressure tester -V.A.G 1342-

t	Voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B-

t	Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594 A- or auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-

Test prerequisites

l	Engine oil level OK, checking → Fig..

l	Engine oil temperature at least 80 °C (radiator fan must have run once).

Note

Functional check and repair of the visual and acoustic oil pressure warning → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.

Test procedure

–	Remove oil pressure switch -F1- and screw it into tester.

–	Screw tester into oil filter bracket in place of oil pressure switch.

–	Connect brown wire of oil pressure tester -V.A.G 1342- to earth (-).

–	Connect voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B- to battery positive (+) and oil pressure switch using cables from auxiliary test set -V.A.G 1594 A- or auxiliary test set -V.A.G 1594C-. LED must not light up.

–	If the LED lights up, renew 1.4 bar oil pressure switch -F1-.

If LED does not light up:

–	Start engine and increase engine speed. At 1.2...1.6.bar, the LED must light up. Otherwise replace oil pressure switch.

–	Increase engine speed further. At 2000 rpm and an oil temperature of 80° the oil pressure should be between 2.7...4.5 bar.

At higher engine speeds, the oil pressure must not exceed 7.0 bar.

If the specifications are not obtained:

–	Check strainer in suction line for soiling → Item.

Note

Mechanical damage, e.g. to bearings, could also be the cause for oil pressure being too low.

If no fault is found

–	Renew oil filter with pressure relief valve → Item or renew oil pump → Item.

If the specification is exceeded:

–	Check oil channels.

–	If necessary, renew oil filter bracket with pressure relief valve → Item.
