Engine installed, cylinder head removed
Engine installed, cylinder head removed

–  Turn crankshaft at securing bolt of vibration damper in engine DOR to TDC cyl. 1 -arrow- marking:
  N13-0135
If TDC no 1 cyl. setting is correct, a groove will be evident on intermediate shaft chain sprockets -arrow-.
If the groove cannot be seen:
–  Turn crankshaft one full turn in engine DOR.
  Note
If crankshaft is turned with cylinder head removed, a 2nd mechanic should guide the camshaft timing chain by hand to prevent it from locking up.
–  Position both camshafts to TDC no. 1 cylinder.
  N13-0283
–  Camshaft bar -3268- must engage in groove of long camshaft and align with shoulder of short camshaft.
–  Preparing cylinder head gasket for assembly → Fig..
–  Installing cylinder head → Chapter.
–  Place guide rail on locating pin. Insert short securing bolt with locking fluid “D6” and tighten bolts to 20 Nm.
–  Fit camshaft chain sprocket and camshaft timing chain to camshaft for cylinder bank 1, 3 and 5 (long camshaft) and pull tight by hand.
–  Install camshaft chain sprocket (with sender wheel for Hall sender) and camshaft timing chain on camshaft for cylinder bank 2 and 4 and pull tight by hand.
  Note
Lubricate bolt head contact surfaces when installing.
–  Remove camshaft bar -3268-.
–  Tighten securing bolts for camshaft chain sprockets to 100 Nm.
  Note
  N15-0156
Counterhold camshaft using AF 24 mm open-jaw spanner only -arrow-. The camshaft bar -3268- must not be fitted when chain sprockets are loosened or tightened.
–  Coat sealing surface of cover with AMV 176 501.
–  Oil O-ring for oil channel seal and insert into cover part.
–  Install cover, insert all securing bolts and tighten lightly.
–  First tighten M8 securing bolts to 25 Nm and then tighten M6 securing bolts to 10 Nm.
–  Install chain tensioner for camshaft timing chain and tighten to 40 Nm.
  Note
Only rotate engine if chain tensioner is installed! Otherwise camshaft timing chain will jump!
–  Turn crankshaft two full turns in direction of engine rotation and check valve timing → Chapter.
  N15-0157
Marking timing chains
–  Mark timing chain before removing (e.g. mark with paint -arrow- in direction of rotation).
  Note
Do not mark chain with a centre punch or any similar means!
