Removing

–  Measure distance -a- from centre of wheel to edge of wheel housing using, for example, a measuring tape. –  Note the measured value. This is required for tightening the bolts for the rear axle on the mounting bracket. –  Fit brake pedal actuator -V.A.G 1869/2-. –  Depress brake pedal with brake pedal depressor. The mounting bracket should not be unbolted to remove the rear axle.

–  With vehicle standing on its wheels, remove bolts -1-. If necessary, lift vehicle until bolts are accessible. –  Loosen wheel bolts. –  Raise vehicle to working height, thus relieving load on coil spring. –  Remove wheels. Securing vehicle to lifting platform The vehicle must be secured to the support arms of the lifting platform before the rear axle is removed. If the vehicle is not strapped down, there is a danger that the vehicle will slip off the lifting platform!

–  Remove plugs from longitudinal member -3- and draw in tensioning strap. 1 -  Lifting platform arm 2 -  Tensioning strap -T10038-  -  The vehicle must be strapped down with the tensioning straps on its left and right sides. Models with headlight dynamic range control –  Unscrew coupling rod of vehicle level sender -G76- from rear axle → Chapter. Continuation for all vehicles

–  Unclip handbrake cable from retainer on rear axle beam -arrow A- and unhook from retainers -arrows-. –  Pull off clamp -1-. –  Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with a cloth beneath brake line.

–  Separate brake lines.

–  Remove securing bolts from brake caliper housing, counterholding on guide pin. –  Remove brake caliper and hang from body.

–  Detach connector -1- from speed sensor. –  Unclip speed sensor wire from retainer. –  Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- beneath. –  Support rear axle.

–  Remove bolts -1- for mounting bracket on rear axle on both sides and lower rear axle.
