Removing camshafts
Removing camshafts
  Note
t  Sealing surfaces at bottom of retaining frame and top of cylinder head may not be machined.
t  The camshaft bearings are integrated into the cylinder head and the retaining frame. The toothed belt must be relieved of tension before the retaining frame is removed.
t  Renew camshaft oil seal and sealing cap if retaining frame has been unfastened.
t  From 01/2006 engines with engine codes BVX, BVY, BVZ and AXW have a split toothed belt guard. Identification: top part of toothed belt guard has no cover → Item and the toothed belt guard is split in the area of the engine bracket.
–  Remove camshaft adjuster → Chapter.
Vehicles without split toothed belt guard
–  Remove toothed belt:
   Golf without split toothed belt guard (BLR, BLX, BLY, BVX, BVY, BVZ) → Chapter.
   Touran without split toothed belt guard (BLR, BLX, BLY, BVX, BVY, BVZ) → Chapter.
Vehicles with split toothed belt guard:
   
–  Remove bolts -arrows- and remove toothed belt guard upwards.
–  Loosen tensioning roller and remove toothed belt from camshaft toothed belt pulley.
Continuation for all vehicles:
  A13-0558
–  Loosen camshaft pulley (use counterhold tool -3036-).
  A13-0381
–  Pull off camshaft toothed belt pulley using puller -T40001-, hook -T40001/6- and hook -T40001/7-.
–  Remove rear toothed belt guard from cylinder head.
–  Loosen retaining frame bolts evenly working from outside inwards and remove retaining frame.
–  Carefully lift out the camshafts and place them down on a clean surface.

–  Remove old sealant from groove in retaining frame as well as from sealing surfaces.
–  Make sure dirt and remnants of sealant do not drop into cylinder head.
