Removing and installing knee airbag bracket (Golf 2009 ►) LHD models
Removing and installing knee airbag bracket (Golf 2009 ►) LHD models
Removing
  WARNING
Observe the general safety regulations when working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery isolator units (pyrotechnic components) → Chapter
–  Switch ignition on.
–  Disconnect vehicle battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove knee airbag (Golf 2009 ►) → Chapter
–  Remove dash panel end trim on driver side → Chapter.
–  Push rotary light switch forwards, turn clockwise until it is vertical and then pull it out and separate wiring harness.
–  Release steering column gap cover from dash panel → Chapter. There is no need to remove the complete steering column trim.
–  Remove dash panel insert → Electrical system; Rep. gr.90. No need to disconnect wiring harness.
–  Remove left trim on driver side → Chapter.
–  Remove dash panel middle trim (Golf 2009 ►) → Chapter
–  Remove air conditioner controls unit / heater controls unit trim (Golf 2009 ►) → Chapter
–  Remove centre cover (Golf 2009 ►) → Chapter
Vehicles with automatic gearbox
–  Detach gearstick boot from cover → Rep. gr.37.
Vehicles with manual or dual clutch gearbox
–  Detach gearstick boot from cover → Rep. gr.34.
–  Remove stowage compartment or ashtray (Golf 2009 ►) → Chapter
–  Remove centre console cover (no need to dismantle centre console completely):
t  Basic version → Chapter
t  Highline version → Chapter
–  Remove right trim on driver side → Chapter.
–  Remove footwell vent on driver side → Heating, air conditioning; Rep. gr.80.
   
–  Remove screw -9- (1.5 Nm) and bracket -8-.
–  Remove bolts -3- and -4- (1.5 Nm).
–  Remove bolts -1-, -2-, -6- and-7- and remove bracket -5-.

Installing
  WARNING
If a knee airbag bracket is renewed, the paint in the area of the stud and on the contact surfaces of the cross member must be removed. This is absolutely essential to ensure an effective earth connection.
   
  Caution
Adhere to bolting sequence -2-, -6-, -1- and -7- to assure correct installation.
–  Secure knee airbag bracket with bolts -2-, -6-, -1- and -7- (9 Nm).
–  Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
