Renewing oil seal for right flange shaft - four-wheel drive > < Renewing seals for right flange shaft or stub shaft - front-wheel drive

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Multipurpose tool -VW 771-
t  Puller hooks -VW 771/37-
t  Thrust piece -3305-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-

Removing
l  Gearbox is installed.
–  Remove wheel.
–  Remove centre and left parts of noise insulation below engine and gearbox, if fitted.
–  Remove left drive shaft.
–  Place drip tray under gearbox.
   
–  Remove flange shaft securing bolts by screwing 2 bolts into flange and counterholding flange shaft with a lever.
–  Pull out flange shaft with compression spring.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal with multi-purpose tool-VW 771- and puller hooks-VW 771/37-.
Installing
–  Half-fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with sealing grease -G 052 128-.
  N39-1090
–  Drive in new seal to stop, being careful not to cant seal.
–  Insert flange shaft.
–  Screw in new countersunk bolt for securing stub shaft or flange shaft and tighten to 30 Nm.
–  Bolt swivel joint to suspension link at old impression marks using new bolts. → Rep. gr.40
–  Install left drive shaft. → Rep. gr.40
–  Install front left wheel housing liner → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66.
–  Install left wheel → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.44.
–  Check oil level and top up → Chapter.
–  Install noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
