  Note
t  The connecting pipe can be cut through at the cutting location in order to remove and install or renew the centre and rear silencers separately.
t  Cutting location is marked by an indentation on circumference of exhaust pipe.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Pneumatic sabre saw -V.A.G 1523 A- or
  W00-0005
t  Chain-type pipe cutter -VAS 6254-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331- (not illustrated)
t  Eye protection
t  Protective clothing
Separate
Prerequisite
l  Engine must be cold.
Procedure
  WARNING
To avoid injury from metal shavings, wear eye protection and protective clothing.

–  Cut through exhaust pipe at separating point -arrow 2- at right angles e.g. with pneumatic sabre saw -V.A.G 1523 A- or chain pipe cutter -VAS 6254-.
Joining
–  Positioning the repair clamping sleeve during mounting → Chapter.

–  Install clamp so that end of bolt does not extend beyond lower edge of clamp -arrow-:
l  Bolted connection faces to right.
l  Tighten threaded connections evenly.
l  Specified torque → Chapter.

Aligning tailpipes
–  Align rear silencer so that distance -a- between bumper cut-out and left and right tailpipes is even.
