Measuring axial play of camshaft > < Valve gear

Assembly overview - valve gear
1 - 50 Nm + turn 90° further
q   Renew.
2 - Camshaft chain sprocket
q   Note position when installing timing chain.
3 - 10 Nm
4 - Hall sender -G40-
q   With O-ring.
q   Renew O-ring if damaged.
5 - Cylinder head cover
  Caution
The studs (M6x70) must be screwed into cylinder head before cylinder head cover is installed.
The cylinder head cover is guided by the studs, so that the roller rocker fingers do not slip off the supporting elements.
Cylinder head cover is sealed using 2 different sealants!
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Remove sealant residue.
q   Apply sealant D 189 500 A1 and D 154 103 A1 before positioning.
q   When installing, fit vertically from above onto studs and dowel pins.
6 - Non-return valve
  Note
O-rings are not available separately as a replacement part.
7 - 10 Nm

q   If O-rings are damaged, renew non-return valve
q   Before installing, coat lightly with engine oil.
9 - Camshaft
q   Remove and install → Chapter
q   Check axial clearance → Chapter
q   Coat with oil before inserting (also axial bearing shoulder).
10 - Valve cotters
11 - Valve spring plate
12 - Valve stem seal
q   Renew.
13 - Valve spring
q   To remove and install with cylinder head removed, use valve assembly device -2036- and valve lever -VW 541/1 A-
q   With cylinder head installed → Chapter.
14 - Valve guide
q   Check → Chapter.
15 - Cylinder head
q   Remove and install → Chapter
q   Rework valve seat → Chapter.
q   Rework sealing surface → Fig..
16 - Valves
q   Do not rework, only lapping-in is permitted.
q   Valve dimensions → Fig.
17 - Plug, 15 Nm
18 - Seal
q   Renew.
19 - Dowel pins
20 - 8 Nm
q   Observe tightening sequence.
q   Remove and install → Chapter
21 - Retaining frame
q   For camshaft.
q   Remove and install → Chapter

   
Reworking cylinder head sealing surface
Cylinder head reworking dimension: a = at least 103.75 mm
  Note
When the sealing surface has been reworked, the valves must be set deeper by the same amount (valve seat inserts reworked) or valves will contact pistons. When doing this, ensure that the permissible minimum dimension is maintained → Chapter.
