port (1) - install Part No. 113 301 229 A (plug)

  port (2) - install Part No. N 904 674 01 (banjo bolt). As necessary, add 16 mm (1.6 in.) diameter bushings to seal the bolt shank

^

clean steering gear

^

open hose clamp and disconnect boot

^

secure steering gear in a vise with clean, soft jaw covers, to protect rack teeth from dirt and scoring

^

remove tie rod

If parts are to be used again, protect threads from damage at reassembly. Remove old locking compound from stud in tie rod end, and threaded hole in
rack, as follows:

use die (M14 x 1.5) or wire brush to clean stud in tie rod end

^

check condition of threads, and renew as necessary

Note

When starting the die onto the threads, do not tilt the die. If turning motion is difficult or metal shavings form, the thread has been distorted.

seal off opening in the steering gear (arrow), with a cloth

^

use tap (M14 x 1.5) to clean threaded hole in rack
