Dimension of tie rods

Previous tie rod; dimension - a - = 343.1 mm

^

New tie rod; dimension - a - = 318.9 mm 

Note:  A mixed installation of previous and new tie rods is not permitted!

With vehicle raised (wheels hanging free), check play by moving tie rods and wheels. Play: zero play

Check mountings. 

-

Check joint boots for damage and proper seating.

Before installing power steering gear, the steering rack should be set into center position.

Slide steering rack far enough so that dimension - a - is reached.

Dimension - a - = 30.5 mm

Note:  Two technicians are required for adjustments. Adjust with engine off

Raise vehicle on platform.

Wheels in straight-ahead position.

Turning steering wheel back and forth (approximately 30° off center axis) will produce a rattling noise if steering play is too large.

-

Second technician turns adjustment bolt carefully into cover during this, until the rattling noise cannot be heard in vehicle interior anymore.

Perform a test drive, while doing so make sure that steering returns to straight-ahead position on its own, without catching, after vehicle is
maneuvered or driven in a curve.
