Deactivating front passenger airbag
If a customer wishes to transport his/her child in a backward facing child restraint system, the connector in the supply line to the front passenger airbag module must be separated and a vehicle-specific resistance connector must be installed in addition to deactivation of the software.
To do this, front passenger airbag must be removed → Chapter.
To modify, use repair set -1H0 998 521 B-.
  Note
t  Before disconnecting the battery, see the note regarding coding in the radio operating instructions.
t  After reconnecting the battery, ensure vehicle equipment (radio, clock, electric window regulators) is checked as per Workshop manual/Owner's manual.
  WARNING
Disconnect battery earth strap before working on electrical system.
  WARNING
Electrostatic discharges may result in unintentional triggering of the airbag. Therefore, the mechanic must electrostatically discharge himself/herself before disconnecting the igniter and earth wires. This can be done by briefly touching the body or striker plate of the door.
   
–  Connect earth lead -2- from repair set -1H0 998 521 B- to front passenger airbag module.
  Note
First screw ring -3- onto front passenger airbag module housing.
–  Push foam tube over earth lead and fit connector -1- to front passenger airbag unit. Then fix wire in place using cable tie and commercially available fabric tape. (Use foam tube and cable ties from repair set -1H0 998 521 B-).

–  Insert connector housing -1- from repair set -1H0 998 521 B- in connector -2- to airbag control unit.
–  Secure connector housing -1- and connector -2- to airbag wiring harness (use foam tube and cable ties from repair set -1H0 998 521 B-).
–  Install airbag unit, front passenger side → Chapter.
  WARNING
Ensure that nobody is in the vehicle.
–  Connect battery earth strap.
–  Connect fault reader → Chapter.
–  Switch on ignition.
–  Press key -1- for operating mode “Rapid data transfer”.
–  Press keys -1- and -5- (address word of vehicle system to be tested “Airbag” is entered with 15).

–  Insert notice -1- in diagnosis connection (notice remains in vehicle until front passenger airbag is made ready again).
–  Switch on ignition.
Airbag warning lamp -K75- lights up initially for approx. 4 seconds and then flashes for approx. 15 seconds. This signifies that front passenger side airbag is switched off.

–  Attach sticker (front passenger airbag disabled) to mirror cover on front passenger door.
After disabling or activating front passenger side airbag, registration card (see catalogue of illustrations in Technical Service Handbook) must be completed and sent to relevant distribution centre or importer for registration. Confirmation of conversion must be entered into service documents.
In Germany, disabling or activation must be checked by an authorised test centre, for example a vehicle inspectorate, and confirmed with an entry in the vehicle documents.
