Connecting fault reader V.A.G 1551 and selecting engine electronics control unit

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

  • ◆ Fault reader V.A.G 1551 with cable V.A.G 1551/3

Note:

The vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 can be used instead of the fault reader V.A.G 1551, however a print-out is not possible.

Test conditions

  • ● Fuse 22 OK.
  • ● Battery voltage at least 11 V
  • ● Earth connections on engine and gearbox OK.
    (Earth connection engine: , Item 17 ).

Work sequence

  • ‒ → Unclip cover for diagnostic connections.
  • ‒ Connect fault reader (or vehicle system tester) with cable V.A.G 1551/3.
  • ‒ Depending upon desired function:
    Switch on ignition
         or
    Start engine , Table "Selectable functions".

Notes:

  • ◆ If the display does not indicate as described in the work sequence:

=> Fault reader operating instructions

  • ◆ If due to an input fault "Fault in the data transfer!" is displayed, pull wire off fault reader, reconnect and repeat work step.
  • ‒ Operate fault reader taking into account the information on the display:
  • ‒ Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer".
  • ‒ Press keys 0 and 1 for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm entry with Q key.

→ The fault reader V.A.G 1551 display will show the control unit identification, e.g.:

Coding 0000     WSC XXXXX
  • ◆ 037 906 025 = Part No. of the control unit (for latest control unit version see parts catalogue)
  • ◆ SIMOS 4S = System designation and version
  • ◆ 1806 = Programme level number
  • ◆ Coding 00000 = Coding variants
  • ◆ WSC = Workshop code

Engine code AFT

 
→ The fault reader V.A.G 1551 display will show the control unit identification, e.g.:
037 906 025 K     SIMOS 4S2     1957⇒
Coding 0000     WSC XXXXX
  • ◆ 037 906 025 K = Part No. of the control unit (for latest control unit version see parts catalogue)
  • ◆ SIMOS 4S2 = System designation (4S) and
    version (2)
  • ◆ 2025 = Programme level number
  • ◆ Coding 00000 = Coding variants
  • ◆ WSC = Workshop code
