  Note
t  All parts marked with a 1) can be pre-assembled outside of the vehicle. → Anchor Pre-assembling steering column.
t  Renew self-locking nuts and bolts.
t  Welding and straightening work on steering components is not permitted.
1 - Cover plate
2 - Hexagon nut, 50 Nm
3 - Steering wheel
q   Install in central position.
4 - Airbag module
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
5 - Steering wheel for airbag
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
q   Removing and installing coil connector → Chapter.
6 - Hexagon socket head bolt, 9 Nm
q   Renew.
7 - Connector
8 - Splined adapter sleeve
q   Pulling off → Fig..
q   Installing → Fig..
9 - Spring
10 - Steering column switches / steering lock housing1)
q   Distance between steering wheel/steering column switch is not adjustable.
11 - Upper trim

q   With washer.
13 - Steering column1
q   Remove by pulling upwards out of column tube.
q   Check length → Fig..
14 - Hexagon bolt, 30 Nm
15 - Hexagon nut, 25 Nm
16 - Hexagon nut, 30 Nm
17 - Steering column universal joint
18 - Spring
19 - Lower steering column bearing
q   Pull in with multi-purpose tool -VW 771- and large washer.
q   Drive out downwards with a tube.
20 - Damping
q   Only vehicles with diesel engine.
q   Clipped in → Fig..
21 - Washer
22 - Shear-head bolt
q   Tighten until head shears off.
q   Drill out to remove.
23 - Shear-head bolt for vehicles with diesel engine
q   Tighten until head shears off.
q   Drill out to remove.
24 - Locking plate
q   Only vehicles with diesel engine.
25 - Column tube
26 - Lower trim

   
Pulling off splined adapter sleeve
Use puller with arm clamp only (e.g. -Kukko 204/2- commercially available).

Installing splined adapter sleeve
–  Place “sleeve” on steering column and press on with hexagon nut.
–  Remove nut again, install washer and press “sleeve” fully on with nut until the “sleeve” is firmly on its seat.

Checking length of steering column
The small metal lug on the lower section must be visible in the hole in the upper section -arrow-. If necessary pull both sections firmly apart onto stop or press together.

Pre-assembling steering column
–  Carefully clamp lower section of steering column in a vice so that upper part is supported on jaws.

Clipping in damper for column tube
–  Clip rubber into mounting on column tube.
