Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

1.

Disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.

2.

Place front wheels in the straight ahead position, then disconnect battery ground cable and cover negative terminal.

3.

Allow 20 minutes after to disconnecting battery ground cable, prior to working on steering wheel to allow airbag system capacitor to
discharge.

4.

Remove Torx 30 screws from rear of horn pad.

5.

Carefully detach airbag unit from steering wheel, then tilt downward. Gently pry horn pad buttons from front of horn pad, if equipped, then
disconnect electrical connectors.

6.

Disconnect electrical connector from airbag unit, Fig 3, then remove airbag unit. Do not place airbag unit on its vinyl horn pad side. Always
place unit on its metal housing.

7.

Remove steering wheel retaining nut and spring washer.

8.

Mark steering wheel in relation to steering spindle.

9.

Remove steering wheel. Do not turn or release spiral spring assembly while steering wheel is removed.

10.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure wheels are in straight ahead position prior to installing wheel.
b. Align index marks made during removal.
c. Spiral spring assembly must be seated.
d. Torque steering wheel retaining nut to 29 ft. lbs.
