Coding engine control unit
Coding engine control unit
There are control units which may not be coded and those which must be coded.
Therefore, have the control unit identification displayed first.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with diagnosis cable -V.A.G 1551/3-
Procedure
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- and select engine electronics control unit with “address word 01”. When doing this the ignition must be switched on. (Connecting fault reader and selecting engine electronics control unit → Chapter.)
   
If the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- display shows this control unit identification, the control unit must not be coded.
t  No zeros are located before the gearbox variant (MG or AG).
t  The software version begins with a D.

If the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- display shows this control unit coding, the control unit must be coded.
t  Two zeros, and possibly letters, are located before the gearbox variant (MG or AG).
t  The software version consists of a 4-digit number, e.g. 0828.

–  Press buttons 0 and 7 for function “Code control unit” and confirm entry with Q button.

The fault reader -V.A.G 1551- display will show the control unit coding, e.g.:
–  Switch ignition off and then on again.
  Note
The coding entered will be activated by switching the ignition off and then on again. If after entering the valid code the ignition is not switched off and on again, the fault “Control unit incorrectly coded” cannot be erased.
–  Adapt engine control unit to electronic immobilizer → Chapter.
–  Clear fault memory → Chapter
