Timing Belt: Adjustments
Fig. 26 Dial gauge installation
Injection timing is checked by determining injection pump plunger movement at piston TDC with a dial gauge, Fig. 26.
1.
Check that the drive belt tension is OK. Check that cold start lever is in the off position. Reading will be incorrect if cold start cam is on. Adjust
cable, if necessary.
2.
Remove hex plug from injection pump cover and install adapter 2066 and suitable dial indicator Fig. 26. Preload indicator to read approximately
2.5 mm.
3.
Rotate engine counterclockwise slowly until gauge needle stops moving, then zero indicator. Do not rotate engine in opposite direction of
normal rotation by turning crankshaft center bolt. Torque setting of bolt may be disturbed, allowing sprocket to loosen.
4.
Rotate engine clockwise (normal rotation) slowly until TDC mark on flywheel is aligned with pointer. Dial indicator should read within
specification.
a. Non-Turbo:
1. Checking value: 0.90 - 1.00 mm
2. Adjusting value: 0.95 ± 0.02 mm
b. Turbo:
1. Checking value: 0.95 - 1.05 mm
2. Adjusting value: 1.00 ± 0.02 mm
5.
If reading is not within specifications, loosen four pump mounting bolts and rotate pump until indicator reading is correct.
6.
Tighten pump mounting bolts and repeat steps 3 and 4 to check adjustment. Tighten all bolts securely, including bolt on left hand lower side of
pump body. Pump looseness will cause engine surge and poor performance.
7.
With injection pump properly installed and timing within specifications, marks on sprocket, pump and bracket should be aligned with No. 1
cylinder at TDC on compression stroke. If pump position must be altered to reset injection timing, scribe a new mark on pump. Some models
have two timing marks on the injection pump sprocket. The mark crossed out with yellow paint should be disregarded.
8.
Remove the dial indicator, install the timing check plug with a new gasket, and torque the plug to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
9.
Run the engine and check for leaks. If the timing check plug is leaking, it may be torqued to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm).
