Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

  Note
The split backrest is shown as an example.
Removing
  W00-0990
–  If fitted, remove variable luggage compartment floor -1-.
–  Remove bench seat → Chapter.
–  Fold backrest halves forwards.
  N70-10949
–  Backrest central bearing -2- is equipped with a cover cap. Pull lateral legs of cover cap outwards and release cover cap from backrest central bearing.
–  Unscrew bolt -1- (8 Nm) and remove clamp -3- from backrest central bearing -2-.
  N72-10400
–  Release locking hooks -1- on both sides using screwdriver. To do so, press screwdriver against direction of travel -arrow-.
–  Remove left backrest -3- from outer backrest bearing and centre backrest bearing -2-.
–  Remove right backrest -4- from outer backrest bearing -5- and centre backrest bearing -2-.

Installing
–  Install in reverse order of removal.
  Note
Assembly sequence: Insert right backrest into outer and centre backrest bearings. Then insert left backrest into backrest bearings.
–  Close locking hooks in outer backrest mounts using screwdriver.
  WARNING
Carry out a functional check after assembly!
–  Engage backrest in lock.
l  Red seat backrest locking mechanism marking must not be visible!
–  Check locking by pulling on upper backrest surface.
–  Release backrest and fold forwards.
l  Red seat backrest locking mechanism marking must be visible!
–  Engage backrest in lock again.
