Vacuum Pump: Service and Repair

Disassembly

1.

Remove vacuum pump from engine.

2.

Remove vacuum pump cover and gasket.

3.

Remove vacuum pump valve springs, valves and cover assembly. After removing valves, mark valve installation direction. The valves face
opposite ways in the valve cover.

4.

Mark vacuum pump halves with a piece of chalk, then remove pump half attaching screws. Separate vacuum pump halves.

5.

Remove attaching screw, washer, diaphragm, washers and spring from pump.

6.

Remove bottom cover, position a feeler gauge under lever arm, then tap bearing pin from lever arm with a suitable drift. Failure to adequately
support lever arm may result in damage to arm and/or needle bearing.

7.

Remove vacuum pump rod and lever.

Inspection

1.

Soak and clean all parts in suitable solvent.

2.

Check parts for damage, cracks or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.

3.

Check lever arm needle bearing for roughness while rotating arm. If roughness is encountered, replace lever arm.

Assembly

1.

Place pump rod and lever arm into vacuum pump housing, support lever arm with a feeler gauge positioned under arm, then install retaining pin.

2.

Install bottom cover and gasket.

3.

Install washers, diaphragm, washer and spring.

4.

Position vacuum pump upside down, then install attaching screw.

5.

Align pump half marks made during disassembly, then install gaskets, valves, valve springs, gasket and cover.

6.

Install vacuum pump.
