About Volvo
The first Volvo car, the ÖV 4, left the assembly line on 14 April 1927. Ford owned Volvo Cars from 1999 until 2010, when it was sold to Geely.
Reading a Volvo engine code
Each manual lists the engine code, such as B5254T. B means petrol (D is diesel), 5 is the number of cylinders, 25 is the size in decilitres (2.5 litres), 4 is the valves per cylinder, and T means turbocharged (S is non-turbo, F is fuel injection with a catalytic converter).
Shared with Ford and others
- The newer S40 and the V50 share about 60% of their parts with the Ford Focus and Mazda3.
- The S80 introduced Volvo's P2 platform in 1998, developed before Ford bought the company.
- Some earlier S40 and V40 1.8 models use a Mitsubishi 4G93 engine (codes B4184SM and B4184SJ), not a Volvo design.
