Radiator Cooling Fan Motor Relay: Testing and Inspection
EXCEPT MODELS W/ENGINE COOLING FAN IGNITION ADVANCE SYSTEM
1.
Turn ignition to ON position.
2.
Connect a suitable jumper wire between thermal switch electrical connector terminals. Do not disconnect electrical connector.
3.
With jumper wire properly installed, the engine cooling fan should activate.
4.
If fan does not operate, visually check relay, relay wiring and electrical connector for open and/or short circuits, relay for correct installation,
incorrectly grounded and/or damaged electrical connector. After conducting repairs on either the wiring, relay or electrical connector, repeat step
3.
5.
If fan still does not operate, replace relay and repeat test procedure.
MODELS W/ENGINE COOLING FAN IGNITION ADVANCE SYSTEM
1.
Install a suitable ignition timing light onto engine as per manufacturer's instructions.
2.
Start and operate engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
3.
With engine idling, connect two jumper wires at thermal switch to each other.
4.
With the jumper wires connected, the electrical cooling fan should operate and the ignition setting should advance by 13 degrees as indicated by
the timing light.
5.
If either the electric cooling fan does not operate or ignition timing is not advanced by 13 degrees, replace relay assembly as required and repeat
test procedure.
