New Type Cam Gear Power Steering Gear, 740/760
A new type power-assisted steering gear, P/N 1359340-5, manufactured by CAM GEAR was brought into production in January 1985.
The difference between the new and old steering gears can be seen on the side of the valve housing. On the new steering gear the pre-tension assembly is
held in position by an in-hex nut, whereas on the old, a cover plate is fitted.
Both the new and old steering gears operate in the same manner.
The new steering gear is lighter than the earlier type and more parts are made of plastic:
for instance, the rack bushing, which also functions as a lock sleeve. The pinion upper bushing is also plastic (on earlier models a roller bearing was
fitted). This reduces pinion play. The piston seal O-ring and Teflon ring are new. The Teflon ring has 4 notches. The new parts have been fitted to reduce
steering gear noise caused by turning the steering wheel quickly. A service repair kit, P/N 271570-4, containing the new parts is available from Volvo
Parts. The repair kit must be used to modify earlier steering gears.
Reconditioning
A detailed description of how to recondition the steering gear is given in the 760 GLE/Turbo Reconditioning Service Manual TP 30664/1. Consequently,
only those operations which differ from the given repair procedures are dealt with in this bulletin. Operations A8, A9, A10, A22 and B3, B14, B21 and
B22 no longer apply. Note that operations B18 and B19 are interchanged.
