Early Internal Regulator
Type III Regulator With External Leads
Two types of regulator are in use; (1) an earlier type, which is made of electronic components, (2) a later type in image below, which is made using
hybrid-film technology, designated "TWC", is available as an accessory.
A Hybrid-Film Internal Voltage Regulator
Electrical components such as resistors, diodes and transistors are produced on a thick film of ceramic substrate. The function is the same in both
regulators, but the hybrid-film type is much smaller than the transistorized one.
Operation of hybrid-film regulator
Ignition switched on, engine not running and a small current from the battery passes via the ignition switch through the warning light, rotor and voltage
regulator to the car's ground. This small current is the source of the magnetic field in the rotor which is necessary to initiate charging by the alternator.
