Nivomat Rear Shock Absorbers
Volvo 760's and 780's are equipped with Nivomat self-levelling rear shocks. This type of unit incorporates bot a damping function and a pumping
function.
Shock absorbers are sometimes replaced in the belief that the damping function is faulty. In many case however, examination of the replaced units have
shown that they are in perfect working order. Following is a description of the damperoperation and the method for checking the unit.
Description
When the car is loaded, the shock absorber is pumped
up until the correct level is reached. This level is
preset and is a function of both load and spring stiff-
ness.
The normal shock absorber level is then
reached after driving a short distance.
Settling of the car after parking for a few hours, or when loading, does not necessarily mean that a shock is faulty. However, the difference in level
between the left and right sides should not exceed 15mm (0.6").
Level adjustment commences as soon as driving commences; normal level is reached soon afterward. Settling of the car below the preset level while
