Prevents a possible backfire from entering the crankcase. Should the backfire enter the crankcase, it could ignite the blow-by gases. Periodic cleaning or
replacement (see "MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES") of the flame guard helps prevent crankcase over-pressure. Fig. 8.
