Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Manual Steering
Removal/Installation
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle.
2.
Remove splash pan, then the jack support panel on front crossmember.
3.
Disconnect lower steering shaft from steering gear.
4.
Remove snap rings from lower universal joint.
5.
Loosen upper bolt and remove lower bolt from universal joint clamp, then slide joint up steering shaft.
6.
Remove ball joint nut, then disconnect tie rods.
7.
Disconnect oil lines from steering gear.
8.
Remove anti-roll bar brackets from side members and position aside.
9.
Remove steering gear attaching bolts, then the steering gear from vehicle.
10.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering gear attaching bolts to specifications.
Disassembly/Assembly
DISASSEMBLY
1.
Remove steering rack assembly and using fixture tool No. 5046, mount the unit in a vise.
2.
Loosen left side rubber bellow and drain oil.
3.
Loosen locknut, unscrew and remove left ball stud, locknut and bellow.
4.
Unstake and unscrew left steering rod. Repeat steps 2-4 for right side.
5.
Remove cover for pre-tensioning device. Remove spring, O-ring and piston.
6.
Remove pinion cover, lift out pinion and spacer sleeve.
7.
Pull out rack toward pinion side of steering gear.
8.
Using puller tool No. 4078, remove rack bushing. With tool No. 5047, remove lower pinion bearing.
ASSEMBLY
1.
Install new rack bushing and pinion lower bearing.
2.
Install pinion with upper bearing. Place spacer sleeve in housing and install cover.
3.
Check pinion endplay. Endplay is adjusted with shims under the spacer sleeve.
4.
Remove cover and install new seal. Lift pinion out of unit.
5.
Insert the rack into the housing from the pinion side so the teeth do not damage the bushing.
6.
Install pinion, shims and spacer sleeve. Install pinion cover with gasket and seal.
7.
Install pre-tensioning piston in housing. Install cover.
