Removal

To Relieve The Load

1. To facilitate removal of the overdrive, the car should first be driven with the overdrive engaged.
2. Then disengage the overdrive, with the clutch pedal depressed.
3. The latter is important, since it avoids torsional stresses in the shaft between the planet gear carrier and the one way clutch (provided that the

overdrive is in good operating condition). Any stresses can also be relieved by supplying oil at a pressure of 2.0-2.5 MPa (284-356 psi) to the
outlet of the solenoid valve. When this pressure is applied, the overdrive is engaged and disengaged.

Removal

1. Disconnect the propeller shaft from the coupling flange, using tool P/N 5244. (P/N 5244 is unnecessary for a rubber universal joint.)
2. Remove the gearbox cross-member and lower the gearbox.

NOTE:  Check that the distributor is clear of the bulkhead.

3. Disconnect the cables from the solenoid.
4. Remove the bolts retaining the overdrive on the gearbox.
5. Withdraw the overdrive unit straight back, until ii is clear of the gearbox main shaft. Use puller P/N 2709 if the overdrive is difficult to remove.

NOTE:  If the overdrive cannot be removed in the above manner: Remove the coupling flange and carefully tap the rear of the case until it can be
removed. Then dismantle the overdrive part by part from the rear.
