The illumination operation of the buttons is different between the climate control versions as follows. 

for ECC:

The indicating lamp around either button is normally illuminated when the button is 

pressed in.

Note:

When defrost mode is selected, the compressor is ON and recirculation is OFF, even if the switches are pressed in. The lights, however,
indicate the operation of the recirculation flap and the compressor. for MCC:      The indicating lamp in either button is normally illuminated
only when the button is pressed in AND the headlight switch is in park or main beam position.

Note:

When defrost mode is selected, the compressor is ON and recirculation is OFF, even if the switches are pressed in. The switch light indicates
the position of the switches. Therefore, the light in each switch stays ON whenever the button is depressed AND the headlight switch is in
park or main beam position.
