Cold Start Injector: Description and Operation
Cold Start Injector
NOTE:
Not all models are equipped with a cold start injector.
PURPOSE
At cold start, a lot of fuel condenses on the cold surfaces of the intake system in form of droplets. Having a separate cold start injector ensures that
enough evaporated fuel reaches the combustion chamber for improved cold starting performance.
LOCATION
The injector is located in the lower center section of the intake manifold.
CONSTRUCTION
The cold start injector consists of a fuel filter (screen) and a solenoid valve. The solenoid valve opens when energized and closes when without
current.
OPERATION
When the cold start injector is in operation, additional fuel is injected into the intake manifold. It is controlled by the fuel injection ECU. The ECU
energizes the injector when the coolant temperature (temperature sensor signal) is below 5°F (-15°C) and when engine RPM (RPM signal from
ignition ECU) is below 900.
SIGNAL
The signal sent from the fuel injection ECU is an ON/OFF voltage.
