Differential Case: Service and Repair
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheels and bolts attaching support arms to wheel bearing housings. Tap out arms.
2.
Remove bolts and nuts securing lower control arms to wheel bearing housings, then the support arm bolt from one side.
3.
Disconnect track rods from wheel bearing housings using a small puller and a 12 mm x 50 mm bolt to disconnect track rod from each housing.
4.
Remove bolts securing upper and lower sections of rear axle member, then pull wheel bearing housings outward and remove lower section of rear
axle member complete with track rods and control arms.
5.
Remove bolts in propeller shaft/differential coupling, then place a jack and fixture 5972 under differential.
6.
Remove three bolts securing differential to rear axle member, then lower differential slightly.

7.
Replace upper bushing using press tool 5354. Note orientation of bushing, Fig. 6.

Remove lower bushing and bracket, then replace lower bushing using drift 5349, a V-block and a hydraulic press. Note orientation of bushing,

9.
Install lower bushing and bracket, then lift differential into position and tighten bolts attaching differential to rear axle member to specifications.
10.
Install bolts in propeller shaft and tighten to specifications, then raise lower section of rear axle member and loosely install bolts securing upper
and lower sections of rear axle member.
11.
Install to 12 mm bolts or drifts into rear axle member centering holes, then tighten rear axle member assembly bolts to specifications.
12.
Install bolts securing control arms to wheel bearing housings and tighten to specifications while pulling inward toward differential.
13.
Install support arms, track rods and wheels.
