Shifter A/T: Description and Operation
The gear selector (2) is mechanically connected to the transmission by a control rod (22). The gear selector operates the shift valve in the hydraulic
system via the gear selector shaft (14) as well as the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch that mechanically locks the cutout shaft.
The gear-shift position sensor is also located on the gear selector shaft and transmits a signal to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) indicating
which gear has been selected. The PNP switch and back-up (reversing) light switches are also housed in the gear shift position sensor unit. Terminals to
and from the sensor unit are housed in one of the two 8-pin connectors on the front left of the transmission.
The gear selector can be used to select the following gears:

P Parking position. The output shaft is locked and the car cannot move.

R Reverse gear.

N Neutral. The output shaft is free and the car can move with the engine running, but cannot be driven.

D Drive position. The transmission operates in all available forward gears.

3 Fourth gear is not used in this position.

L Low-drive position. Used when driving heavy loads or on steep climbs. If moving off with L selected only fist gear is used. When shifting down
while the car is moving the transmission shifts first to second gear and then to first gear when road speed has been sufficiently reduced.
