Undo the drain plug.
Allow some of the oil to drain out and reinstall the plug. Tighten to 40 Nm. Check the level taking account of the temperature. Wait in each position
for approximately 3 seconds. The oil can also be sucked out through the dipstick pipe using an oil suction syringe with a narrow gauge hose. 

Note:  Strict cleanliness is important.

Oil quality check 
Check the oil 
Note:  Oil grade: Only ATF oil, Volvo P/N 1161540-8 (1 liter containers) may be used.

Warning:  Avoid skin contact with the transmission fluid. 

Check the oil. Take a sample with the dipstick.
Is the oil discolored or does it smell burnt?

Check whether diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) TCM 0042 or TCM 0046 are stored

Also fault-trace the transmission for diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM-0046

Is there water in the oil (gray discoloration)?

Determine the cause of the water in the oil

Replace the transmission

Flush the oil cooler, pipes and oil hoses 
Only ATF oil, Volvo P/N 1161540-8 may be used.
