Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Starter motor, replacing

Removal

-

Disconnect the battery negative lead.

Caution! When removing/installing the battery leads observe warnings.

-

Remove the air cleaner housing.

-

Remove the solenoid from the air cleaner housing.

-

Remove the air cleaner (ACL) housing.  See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust/Engine/Tune-up and Engine Performance Checks/Air Cleaner
Housing/Service and Repair

-

Remove the front screw for the starter motor bracket.
-

Starter motor bracket withdrawn during model year 2002.

-

Disconnect the connector and cable for the solenoid.

-

Remove the screws (2 pcs) that hold the starter motor to the transmission.

-

Remove the starter motor.

Slacken off the nut. Remove the cable
