Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Description and Operation
The suspension strut (6) consists of a cylindrical tube to which the steering knuckle (stub axle carrier) is attached at the lower end by a bolted joint (8).
The ball joint (10) is attached to the lower end of the steering knuckle. The lower spring seat (5) is welded to the upper section of the tube. The shock
absorber (2) is enclosed in the tube and is held in position by a screwed joint at the upper end and a seat at the lower end. The shock absorber piston rod
is located by an upper mounting (1), which is attached to the wheel housing and consists of a ball bearing pressed into a steel sleeve encased in rubber.
The spring is supported in the upper mounting by the upper spring seat, with a bumper and a protective sleeve (3) for the shock absorber piston rod.
