Power Steering Pump: Testing and Inspection

WARNING:
-
Take The Recommended Precautions When Working With Cars Equipped With The SRS System.
-
The Battery Must Not Be Connected And Ignition Switched On When The Steering Wheel Module Is Removed Or Replaced.
-
This Is To Prevent The Airbag Deploying Accidentally.
1. Connect test instrument between the power steering pump and the pressure pipe using nipples.

Nipple is connected to the power steering pump and nipple is connected to the power steering pump pipe.

Feed the hose into the engine compartment as far as possible
-
Position a manometer so that it can be read from the driver's seat.
NOTE:
-
Connect the hose from the instrument petcock to the pressure pipe.
-
The petcock should be parallel with the hose.
2. Fill the reservoir with oil:
-
Fill nearly to the brim.
-
Transmission oil grade:
ATF oil type F. G.
Dexron II D, E, III
Ford Mercon
Volvos synthetic ATF oil, P/N 1 161 317-1.
NOTE:
-
Synthetic oil can be mixed with normal ATF but the cold weather properties are greatly reduced.

When changing to synthetic oil the system should be completely emptied of oil.
-
Start the engine and turn the steering wheel between left and right limit positions.
Check the oil level in the reservoir.
-
Turn the steering wheel slowly and evenly several times.
Check oil level and adjust if necessary.
-
Switch off the engine.
