Valve clearance, checking

Preparatory work

Removal

Disconnect the battery negative cable. See: Battery, disconnecting See: Starting and Charging/Battery/Service and Repair/Procedures/Battery,
Disconnecting.
Remove the valve covers. See: Valve cover/gasket, replacing, B8444S See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust/Engine/Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve
Cover/Service and Repair.

Measuring

Measuring valve clearance

Note! Measurements must only be taken on a cold engine. Suitable temperature is approximately 20 °C/68°F.

Caution! Only turn the crankshaft in normal rotational direction (clockwise).

Turn the crankshaft until the cam lobe is 180 ° to the valve lifter.
Measure the valve clearance between the camshaft and the valve lifter. Use: 999 5752 Feeler gauge See: Tools and Equipment/999 5752 Feeler Gauge.
Note the measurement.
