Engine - Hot Restart Problems

GENERAL
INFORMATION:
During hot weather conditions, it is possible that the vehicle operator may experience difficulty when restarting the engine.
SERVICE
INFORMATION:
The following steps should be taken in the prescribed order when the condition is indicated by an owner:

Vehicle must be operated on a good-quality unleaded gasoline having a pump rating of at least 87. Use of
gasohol (gasoline/ethanol blend) may cause complaints during warmer weather due to its higher volatility.
Engine components or adjustments must not be changed or modified to accommodate the usage of gasohol or
methanol/ethanol-enriched fuels.

Proper starting procedures must be followed to obtain optimum results. Refer to Service Bulletin #0-01 under
heading of "Warm Engine", particularly in regard to use of the accelerator.

Valve clearance, ignition, and emission control systems must be operating properly and set to manufacturer's
specifications. Refer to Service Bulletin #1-01 and the Yugo GV Service Manual.

Idle speed should be set at 850 +/- 50 rpm, preferably toward the high side (850-875).
^
Check to be sure that the air blend flap in the snorkel of the air cleaner is in the closed position to allow entry of
ambient air into air cleaner during warm engine operation.

Verify that no stronger than a 50/50 antifreeze/ water solution is in the cooling system to permit proper cooling.
If after compliance to the previous procedures and checks, the hot restart symptoms persist, the following steps may be taken:

REPLACEMENT OF COOLING FAN SWITCH IN RADIATOR
The original equipment switch is calibrated to turn the cooling fan on at 92~C, and to turn it off at 87~C. Another switch is available which will
turn the cooling fan on at 85~C, and turn it off at 76~C. Installation of this alternate switch will help reduce under-hood temperatures, thereby
improving hot restart characteristics.

RELOCATION OF FUEL FILTER
1.
Remove flexible fuel line hose with fuel filter between carburetor and fuel pump.
2.
Replace this with fuel line Part Number 4041.
3.
Remove flexible fuel line hose between steel fuel line and fuel pump. (This hose should be approximately 12-1/2" long.) Measuring from
one end, cut a 5" section. From the remaining hose, cut a 6-1/2" section. Discard remaining 2" of hose.
4.
Install 5" section of hose on steel fuel line.
5.
Install previously removed fuel filter into 5" section of hose, with flow arrow facing towards fuel pump, using previously removed
clamps.
6.
Connect fuel filter to fuel pump using 6-1/2" section of fuel line hose and clamp. Bend metal line as necessary to prevent interference of
fuel line or filter with distributor vacuum advance or air conditioning system components.
7.
Run engine and check all hose connections for leaks.
