Removing and installing brake pads - front brakes (PR 1ZC)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
t  Piston resetting appliance -T10145-
Removing
Mark brake pads when removing if they are to be reused. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Remove front wheels.
   
–  Lever off brake pad retaining spring from brake caliper housing with a screwdriver -arrow- and remove.

–  Remove caps -arrows-.

–  Remove guide pins -arrows-.
–  Remove brake caliper and secure with wire so that weight of brake caliper does not strain or damage brake hose.
  WARNING
Do not leave the brake caliper hanging from the brake hose.
  Note
Brake hose/line must not be twisted or kinked.
–  Take brake pads out of brake caliper housing or from brake carrier.
  Note
Mark brake pads when removing them if they are to be reinstalled. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
Installing
Use only methylated spirits for cleaning the brake caliper housing.
Before pressing piston back into cylinder with piston resetting tool, draw off brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if the reservoir has been topped up.
  WARNING
Brake fluid is poisonous and must NOT be drawn off by sucking through a hose.

–  Press piston back.
–  Pull protective foil (if fitted) off brake pad backplate.

–  Insert brake pads, paying attention to installation position:
1 - Brake pad (right-side)
2 - Brake pad (left-side)
t  When installed, arrow on backplate of brake pad must face downwards.
–  Install brake caliper.

–  Bolt brake caliper to brake carrier with both guide pins -arrows-.
–  Tighten both guide pins.
–  Fit both caps -arrows-.

–  Insert retaining spring -arrow- in brake caliper housing.
  WARNING
t  The retaining spring must be pressed under the brake carrier after inserting into both holes. If incorrectly installed, the wear of the outer pad cannot be adjusted, and the pedal travel will be increased as a result.
t  After installing the brake pads, depress pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
–  Fit wheels.
Tightening torque for wheel bolts → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.44
–  Lower vehicle.
  Note
t  Every time after changing the brake pads, depress the brake pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary, so that the pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
t  Check brake fluid level after changing brake pads.
  Caution
Make sure that the brakes work properly before the vehicle is driven on the road.
–  Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
