Renewing oil seal for flange shaft (right-side) Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Multi-purpose tool -VW 771-

t  Puller hook -VW 771/37-

t  Drift sleeve -3158-

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- t  Sealing grease -G 052 128 A1- Procedure l  Gearbox in vehicle

–  Remove noise insulation -1- → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66. –  Unbolt drive shaft from flange shaft. –  Tie-up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.

–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox. –  Remove right flange shaft securing bolt; to do so, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with tyre iron or other suitable lever. –  Pull out flange shaft together with spring, thrust washer and tapered ring.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using multi-purpose tool -VW 771- and puller hook -VW 771/37-.

–  Lightly oil outer circumference of new oil seal. –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.

–  Drive in new oil seal onto stop (take care to keep oil seal straight). –  Push flange shaft in against spring pressure and secure with bolt. –  Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft → Rep. gr.40. –  Check gearbox oil level in manual gearbox. If necessary, top up to bottom lip of filler hole → Chapter. –  Install noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66. Tightening torque → Chapter
