Removing and installing operating and display unit -E87
  • ‒ Removing and installing the operating and display unit -E87 with two displays .
  • ‒ Removing and installing the operating and display unit -E87 with one display => Page 87-71.

Notes:

  • ◆ Prior to removal, interrogate -E87 fault memory.
  • ◆ After replacing -E87, always:
    - Check code and enter new code if necessary.
    - Perform basic setting.
    - Interrogate fault memory.
  • ◆ The display on -E87 may be switched from °Cto °F and vice versa by pressing the "temperature +" button with the "recirculated air" button pressed.
  • ◆ If the -E87 continues to function after the ignition has been switched off, use the current flow diagram to check for a short circuit to positive in the wiring to connector -D- contact -1- (type with two displays) or contact -10- (type with one display) (connection auxiliary heater operation).
  • ◆ If the display of a newly installed operating and display unit flashes (for approx. 2 minutes) after the ignition is switched on, encode the operating and display unit and perform basic setting.
  • ◆ If an -E87 operating and display unit with part number as of index "H" is replaced, the temperature is displayed on -E87 in °F in vehicles in which the assignment of the ignition key is transferred from the dash panel insert. The display can be converted from °F to°C in these vehicles by actuating the "temperature +" key with the "recirculated air button" pressed. Each ignition key must be converted individually (as all ignition keys are not generally available in the workshop, the customer must be instructed as to how to perform the conversion).
  • ◆ Up to and including model year 2000 operating and display units with two displays were installed. As of model year 2001 there was a changeover to the type with one display.

Note for the type with one display:

This operating and display unit are available in four different types (for vehicles with or without heated seats, for vehicles with or without radio navigation system).

=> Parts List

Notes for the type with two displays:

  • ◆ If the two display zones in the operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 up to and including index "C" are not illuminated when ignition is switched on service voltage supply terminal 58D (dimmer) to the -E87 according to current flow diagram (electrical check).

→ Only operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 up to and including index "C" can be installed in vehicles from model year 1997.
8L0 820 043 B    A3 Fully aut. air cond. DXX
Code XXXXX    WSC ZZZZZ
  • ◆ The pin assignment of control and display unit -E 87 has changed at the start of model year 1998 (inputs for lighting).
  •
→ Only operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 as of index "D" can be installed in vehicles as of model year 1998.
    8L0 820 043 D    A3 Fully aut. air cond. DXX
    Code XXXXX    WSC ZZZZZ
  • ◆ If the two display zones of the operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 as of index "D" are not illuminated when ignition is switched on check voltage supply of terminal 58d (dimmer) to -E87 (electrical test).
    • ◆ If the two display zones in the operating and control unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 as of index "D" are not illuminated when the ignition is switched on, check voltage supply from terminal 58s (search light) to -E87 (Electrical check).
    • ◆ If an operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 as of index "D" is installed in a vehicle from model year 1997, the brightness of the switch illumination cannot be altered (Electrical check).
    • ◆ If an operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 as of index "C" is installed in a vehicle from model year 1998, the brightness of the switch illumination cannot be altered (Electrical check).
    • ◆ The coding for the operating and display unit -E87 is different in vehicles with map-controlled cooling to that for vehicles without map-controlled cooling (for 1.6l engine to be gradually introduced as of model year 1999).

→ Only an operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 as of index "H" can be installed in vehicles with map-controlled cooling, as the map-controlled cooling coding is only recognised as of this index. As indices "H", "J", "K" and "L" are already allocated to a modified version of -E87 (use in series production planned for first quarter of 2000), operating and display units -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 and index "M" (or "N" for Japan) will be installed until production has been reorganised.
    8L0 820 043 H    A3 Fully aut. air cond. DXX
    Code XXXXX    WSC ZZZZZ
  • ◆ As of model year 2000, the assignment of the ignition key is conveyed by the dash panel insert (data telegram) together with the refrigerant temperature (when ignition is switched on). This information can only be processed by operating and display unit -E87 with part number 8L0 820 043 as of index "H". As the indices "H", "J", "K" and "L" are already allocated to a modified version of -E87 (use in series production as of model year 2001), operating and display units with part number 8L0 820 043 and indexes "M" (or "N" for Japan) will be installed until production has been reorganised.
