Changing ATF or filling up after performing repairs Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

t  ATF filling unit -V.A.G 1924- t  Allen key (5 mm) t  Safety goggles

Procedure l  Engine not running. –  Fill ATF filling unit -V.A.G 1924- with the ATF for the automatic gearbox 01M. l  ATF specifications → Electronic parts catalogue.   WARNING The ATF filling unit must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with other types of ATF!   Note t  Observe relevant disposal regulations. t  The engine must not be started and vehicle must not be towed without ATF in gearbox. t  Before fitting a replacement gearbox, always clean the ATF cooler. –  Secure reservoir for ATF filling unit -V.A.G 1924- as high as possible on vehicle.

Draining ATF –  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox.   WARNING Wear safety goggles. –  Remove ATF inspection plug -2-. –  Drain ATF. –  Unscrew overflow pipe -1- and allow remaining ATF to drain. Filling up ATF –  Screw overflow pipe -1- back in as far as it will go (2 Nm). –  Hand-tighten inspection plug -2-.

–  Remove centre noise insulation (loosen fasteners -arrows-).

–  Remove left noise insulation -arrows-.

–  Prise off cap -arrow- securing sealing plug.   Note t  The cap -arrow- securing the sealing plug is supplied in two versions. t  The cap with snap-lock is damaged upon removal and must be renewed. t  The cap with a spring retainer can be used again. –  Detach sealing plug from filler pipe and attach pipe of ATF filling unit -V.A.G 1924- to filler pipe.

–  Use ATF filling unit -V.A.G 1924- to fill gearbox with 3 litres of ATF. –  Start engine. –  With brake pressed, select all gear positions “P, R, N, D, 3, 2” one after the other at idling speed, maintaining each position for at least 3 seconds. –  Shift selector lever into position “P”. –  Check and top up ATF level → Chapter.   Note Observe all notes and test requirements for “Checking and correcting ATF level”.   Caution Both overfilling and underfilling will impair the function of the gearbox.
