Dismantling planetary gearbox
Procedure
–  Drain ATF → Chapter.
–  Remove gearbox → Chapter.
–  Take out torque converter.
–  Seal off ATF cooler with clean plugs.
–  Secure gearbox to engine/gearbox support → Chapter.
   
–  Remove gearbox housing cover with gasket -arrow-.
–  Unscrew bolts on ATF oil pan in diagonal sequence and remove ATF oil pan.
  Caution
Additionally renew torque converter if remaining ATF contains metal particles.

–  Pull ATF strainer off valve body.
–  Remove valve body with conductor strip → Chapter.

  Caution
Remove sealing plug and gearbox speed sender to prevent them from being damaged.
–  Pull out sealing plug for “B1”.
–  Remove gearbox speed sender -G38- → Item.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- for ATF pump.
  N37-0201
–  To remove ATF pump, screw two M8 bolts -A- into tapped holes of ATF pump.
–  Tighten bolts -A- evenly to press ATF pump off gearbox and remove.
–  Remove gasket, corrugated washer, retaining ring and shim.

–  If fitted, remove strainer.
  Note
The strainer is installed in the return pipe of the ATF cooler. It cannot be retrofitted in older gearboxes.

–  Take hold of turbine shaft and pull out all clutches together with supporting tube for “B2”, plates for “B2”, springs and spring caps -arrow-.
  Note
t  Depending on version, clutches “K1” and “K3” may be pressed together
t  “K1” does not have to be pressed off “K3” unless one of the clutches is to be dismantled or replaced.
t  Pressing “K1” off “K3” → Chapter.
–  Engage parking lock.

–  To slacken off the bolt for the small input shaft, insert a screwdriver through one of the holes in the large sun gear.
  Note
If the parking lock cannot be engaged, also block the large input shaft using a second screwdriver.

–  Remove bolt -1- for small input shaft and detach with washer -2- and shim -3-.
–  Pull out small input shaft.
  Note
The axial needle bearing for the planet carrier remains in the gearbox/input gear.

–  Pull out large input shaft -arrow-.

–  Pull out large sun gear -arrow-.
  N37-0012
–  Remove circlips for supporting tube -a- and freewheel -b-.
–  Take hold of the inside of the planet carrier and pull it out together with freewheel and dished spring.
–  Remove pressure plate, plates and shim(s) of the reverse gear brake “B1”.
–  Take off axial bearing and washers.
  Note
t  The input gear does not have to be removed when dismantling the planetary gearbox. Removing and installing input gear → Chapter.
t  Assembling planetary gearbox → Chapter.
